In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
