Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
