Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
