Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
